There are many ways to reduce your risk of colorectal cancer:

Regular screening

Having regular screening tests (such as a colonoscopy) for colorectal cancer is an important part of colorectal cancer prevention. Removing polyps during screening can help stop colorectal cancer before it starts.

Healthy lifestyle changes

By making the following healthy changes to your lifestyle, you may be able to lower your risk of colorectal cancer:

  • make exercise a regular habit
  • eat more fibre, fruits, vegetables, healthy fats and calcium - diets high in these items have been linked to decreased risk of colorectal cancer (a diet high in red meat, refined foods, and unhealthy fats has been linked to an increased risk of colorectal cancer)
  • work at achieving and maintaining a healthy weight
  • quit smoking

Talk to your doctor about your risk for colorectal cancer and what you can do to lower it.
