COPD treatment

COPD symptoms such as shortness of breath are not a normal part of aging, and can be managed with appropriate treatment.

Here are some steps to take charge of your COPD treatment:

  • Speak to your doctor regularly about your symptoms to make sure you are on an appropriate treatment plan for your level of COPD severity.
  • Make sure you understand what each of your COPD medications is for and how to use it. Ask your doctor or pharmacist to review your inhaler techniques to make sure you are using your inhaler(s) correctly.
  • Ask your doctor about joining a pulmonary rehabilitation program, where you will learn about breathing techniques, exercise, nutrition, and coping with COPD.
  • Ask your doctor about getting the influenza and pneumococcal vaccines to lower your risk of a flare-up.
